What is Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV).
The virus is found in the blood of people with this disease.
The disease is spread by blood-to-blood contact.

 

How Serious is Hepatitis C?

Treatment is effective in 30 – 40% of people treated.
You should check with your doctor to see if treatment would help you.
There is no vaccine to prevent hepatitis C.

 

How can I prevent spreading Hepatitis C to others?
Do not donate blood, body organs, other tissue, or sperm.
Don’t share toothbrushes, razors, or other articles that could have blood on them.
Cover sores or cuts on the skin.
People should not be excluded from work or other activities because of HCV infection.

 

If you use Street Drugs.
Stop and get into a program.
Don’t share or reuse syringes, water, or works.
Get vaccinated for Hepatitis B & A

 

HCV is not spread by.
Breast-feeding, sneezing, casual contact, hugging, food, water, coughing, sharing eating utensils, or drinking glasses

 

How do I protect my liver?
See your doctor regularly.
Don’t drink alcohol.
Don’t take over the counter or herbal medicines until you speak to your doctor.
Get vaccinated against hepatitis A if you have liver damage.
